Episode Summary

EDIT
San Francisco/Bay Area: 924 Gilman St.-like a West Coast CBGB, only more punk
AIRED:
Only in Berkeley-just over the Bay Bridge from San Francisco-a city that changed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day, would you find a punk-rock club that's non-profit, staffed by volunteers, serves no alcohol, and refuses to book major-label bands. There's no sign out front, no backstage area and, in the early days, bands had to help clean up after shows: At 924 Gilman Street, everyone is equal. Not long after its first show on December 31, 1986, Gilman became an incubator for the active Bay Area punk scene, which produced bands that heavily influenced the punk wave that followed in the '90s-and in one case at least, made massive stars out of three local goofballs.moreless
