Episode Summary

This 13-part series offers a fascinating look at international train travel. Not only do we get a close-up look at the type of train used and the accommodations offered, but we are able to observe points of interest and various landscapes along the route until we reach our final destination. This segment covers train travel in Tunisia. Though Tunisia's railway network is not widely developed, exploring this North African country by train provides a wealth of experience. The route starts in Tunis and passes by Sousse, El Jem, and Sfax to the cave dwellers and desert nomads around Gabes. It is a journey past tangible and often beautifully restored memories of the Roman era during the first centuries A.D. The beginning and end of the journey form a fascinating contrast. Tunis, an Islamic metropolis with Western influences, is total different from the final destination, Gabes, where you can see a still unspoiled African culture.moreless
