Saxophonist Kenny Garrett has been a leader in his own right for over twenty years.He backed some major heavyweights in jazz as well. Coming up next on The Pace Report, Kenny and I talk about his critically acclaimed Mack Avenue Records release Sketches of MD featuring the legendary Pharaoh Sanders recorded live at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York. He explains why he chose the Iridium over the endless jazz clubs located in New YorkGarretts name in the jazz community has grown musically with many different musicians hes backed over the years. He was a member of Miles Daviss last group and played with him for five years. A member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and backed Woody Shaw. This Detroit native has represented jazz and the many forms that extend from it. Upon graduating from high school, one of Kennys first professional gigs was playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington. Garrett went from being groomed by some of the elder musicians hes played with to now grooming new and talented musicians in his band.Kennys excited about his new album being released on Mack Avenue Records out of his hometown of Detroit.Although Sketches of MD is being heavily promoted, his current band is different from the disc.
