When we decided to make a video about farmed Bluefin tuna, it was with trepidation. This is not the perfect fish, it could harldy be considered sustainable (they ear a lot of other fish). But it's a step in the direction of killing the last of the wild Bluefin tuna. This fishery is the only place in the world that spawns Bluefin, so instead of taking away from the world resources, its adding to it. Watch the video, make your own decision, but know that it is delicious. Each day in Mumbai 4000 men in white outfits and matching hats transport 175,000 lunches across the big city. They retrieve the tiffens (lunch containers) of food from mothers and wives, and bring them (by foot, train, bicycle and even carried on top of their heads) to the office buildings of waiting husbands and sons. The Dabba Wallas have been doing this since the late 1800s. Despite the unsophisticated mode of transport, the lunches always arrive on time (the error rate is 1 in every 16 million transactions). It's a pretty impressive feat and we were lucky enough to follow a couple Dabba Wallas for a day in Mumbai, and see their work first hand. We weren't planning on putting out a video today, but last week Mirra and I got engaged!...and we couldnt think of a better way to announce it than our first love story from the road: We came to Sri Lanka with every intention of filming a video about an organic, fair trade tea farmer. That is exactly what we were planning when we set foot on the small tea farm of Piyasena and his wife Ariyawatha. What we didnt expect was to be so taken with the relationship between the two of them. What started as a farm story quickly turned into a story about love and dedication amongst the Ceylon tea fields. In Sri Lanka, the coconut is, in a sense, a source of life. Not only it is the main ingredient in most Sri Lankan dishes, but it also plays a major role in many non-culinary parts of every day life. Without the coconut, things in Sri Lanka would be very different. We spent the day with a family of 8 on their modest coconut plantation outside of Negombo, where they showed us all this fruit (nut?.. seed?..) has to offer. It's harvest time. Earlier this week I had the good fortune of spending two days at Whole Grain Milling Co. where they take a number of grains from organic beginnings to a Co-op or grocery store shelf near you. I saw the oat harvesting process, but it was owner Doug Hilgendorf's words that struck me the most. Enjoy.moreless

    • Every culture has different foods that are socially acceptable to eat. Thus, growing up in England, Squirrel was never part of my diet. But for John Ny Vang, who is from Laos but has lived in Minnesota for the last 30 years, Squirrel is just like any other meat. A few weeks ago, he took me out on a hunting expedition to shoot the little guys. Squirrels were shot, and squirrels were eaten... and they were delicious! Believe it or not, I went back for seconds and thirds.moreless
