With her acrobatic vocals, multifaceted songwriting and plunking strings, Anni Rossi sounds like a lovechild of Andrew Bird and Regina Spektor carried to term by Emily Haines. At only 23, she already shows the sophistication of a much older artist. Classically trained as a viola player, the Minnesota native gained some internet buzz with her string-plunking, foot-stomping interpretation of Radiohead's "Creep" in 2006. The following year, her self-released album Scandia gained her a contract with 4AD. Recently, she recorded her full-length album Rockwell with legendary producer Steve Albini. The album finds her exploring other instrumentation beyond her usual viola, adding layers of depth to her already complex style. Rossi has spent her time lately supporting the Ting Tings and Electrolane at shows through the U.S. and Europe.moreless
