For me, Marmoset definitely qualify as hometown heroes. Jorma Whitaker and company have kept the band going for 15 years, and with records on Indiana-based labels Secretly Canadian and Joyful Noise. I still get excited that I can catch them at the Melody Inn. With six albums under their belts, the band knows what they're doing and just how to do it. They may not be creating a new genre of music, but they're doing a fine job maintaining one. The skuzzy bass lines and deadpan vocals in 'Gretchen' make me feel like I'm listening to angsty lads holed up in some small English town in the early 80's, and I'm totally into it. And the back-up vocalists on 'He's Been Napping' make that song engaging as hell. I'm torn between pretty, lilting vocals and sort of a surge of anger, but it's this juxtaposition that makes this song so awesome. Their live shows give us Whitaker commanding the crowd as he looms over the microphone, creeping everybody out-but in a really good way. It's an eerie, almost sinister mix of Brit-pop , grunge, and psychedelic rock, and although that may sound strange, I assure you: it works.moreless
