The Meat Puppets are an influential rock band originally from Phoenix, Arizona. Formed in 1980 by two brothers, bassist Cris Kirkwood and vocalist/guitarist Curt Kirkwood, along with drummer Derrick Bostrom, they started out as a punk band but found eventually found their own style blending country, punk, rock, folk, and blues. The Meat Puppets released their debut self-titled album on punk label SST in 1982. Their second album, Meat Puppets II (SST, 1984), saw them moving away from punk rock toward their own sound. They released four more albums for SST, including two in 1987, Mirage and Huevos, all the while touring incessantly and becoming college radio favorites. The band broke up briefly after an unsuccessful album, 1989's Monsters (SST), and then re-signed to a major label, London Records. The Meat Puppets gained wider attention in 1993 after performing with Nirvana during their MTV Unplugged performance, where they also covered three Meat Puppets songs, including "Lake of Fire." The Meat Puppets' second major label release, Too High To Die, followed the MTV Unplugged performance and Cobain's death, and also contained the band's biggest hit, "Backwater." After releasing No Joke! in 1995, the Meat Puppets went on hiatus. It would be 12 years before they released a new album. They reformed in 2006 with Ted Marcus on drums and released Rise to Your Knees in 2007. They released Sewn Together (Mega Force) in May 2009.moreless
