Phylicia Rashad is a critically-acclaimed and award-winning actress, singer, and director perhaps best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Born in Houston, Texas to a family who valued actively participated in the arts, Rashad first gained recognition on Broadway, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Dreamgirls, The Wiz, Into the Woods, and A Raisin in the Sun for which she was the first African-American actress to receive the Tony Award for Best Actress in 2004. It was on The Cosby Show (NBC, 1984-1992) that Rashad became viewed as the ultimate mother, Clair Huxtable, a performance which garnered her two Emmy nominations, two People's Choice Awards, and an NAACP Image Award. The Cosby Show was the most successful television show in the '80s, revived the sitcom genre as a whole, and helped pave the way for other television shows based on African-Americans. After The Cosby Show Rashad continued in television, including Cosby (CBS, 1996-2000), for which she won another NAACP Image Award, and Touched By An Angel. In 2008 she appeared in a television film version of A Raisin in the Sun (ABC) and was again nominated for an Emmy Award and won an NAACP Image Award. Ms. Rashad has also starred in films including For Colored Girls, Frankie and Alice, and Just Wright, and has directed plays including Gem of the Ocean in Seattle in 2007 and A Raisin In The Sun in Los Angeles in 2011.moreless
