Seu Jorge is one of Brazil's best known singers and is credited for renewing interest in samba music. He is also known as an actor and soundtrack composer. Born into a Rio de Janeiro favela in 1970, Jorge was an actor and member of the band Farofa Carioca before he left to pursue a solo career in 1999. His first solo album, Samba Esporte Fino (2001), was produced by Mario Caldato (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson) and was half cover songs. His next two albums, Cru (2004), and The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions (2005), also featured cover versions, with Life Aquatic being entirely Portuguese language versions of David Bowie songs. In addition to providing the soundtrack, Jorge appeared in the Wes Anderson film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). He also acted in the Oscar-nominated film, City of God (2002). In 2008, Jorge released America Brasil: O Disco (Naive Records), his first album of almost all original material. In 2010, Jorge collaborated with three highly resepected Brazilian artists: drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from Nacao Zumbi, along with bassist and composer Antonio Pinto. The resulting album, Seu Jorge & Almaz (Now-Again Records), combines samba, soul, and rock, and features songs by Jorge Ben, Michael Jackson, Kraftwerk, and Roy Ayers.moreless
