Episode Summary

EDIT
Filmed in Russia, the United States, Japan, China, Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden, Wings Over the World pulls together a series of mammoth proportions. Containing much previously unseen footage from around the world, each hour long documentary tells the story of 20th century flight as seen through the eyes of those who were boys at the time of the Wright brothers memorable first flight - boys who grew into the men who built world aviation. After pioneering Russian aviation and creating many world firsts, Sikorsky fled the Bolshevik revolution finally arriving in New York a penniless immigrant. While his contemporaries struggled in the New Soviet Union, Sikorsky once again built aircraft, this time in an abandoned chicken coop. He pioneered transatlantic flight with Charles Lindbergh and fought frustration and failure to fulfill his boyhood dream of vertical flight. His fascinating story continues to the present day with the development of modern rescue, combat and civilian helicopters, earning for him the title: "Father of the Modern Helicopter."moreless
