Episode Summary

Filmed in Russia, the United States, Japan, China, Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden, Wings Over the World pulls together a series of mammoth proportions. Containing much previously unseen footage from around the world, each hour long documentary tells the story of 20th century flight as seen through the eyes of those who were boys at the time of the Wright brothers memorable first flight - boys who grew into the men who built world aviation. At the turn of the century the remains of a feudal system divided and restricted the concerted development of aviation. Its early aviators learned their craft mainly from western countries. Ninomiya established the first really serious beginning in Japan's dream of flight. But as he prepared his machine, he was slowed by a lack of funds and was beaten into the air by the Wright brothers in 1903. At first progressing along separate paths, the Japanese army and navy independently built aviation industries, which finally combined to form one of the most formidable air forces of World War II. Today in a highly competitive market, Japan stands at the forefront of technological development, a leader in military and civil aviation technology both in its own right and in international cooperation, competing in an age of supersonic and space flight. As the 20th century draws to a close, Ninomya's early flying machine actually flies, proving that if he had taken off as planned we might now be regarding Japan as the birthplace of controlled, powered and sustained flight.moreless
