Episode Summary

Filmed in Russia, the United States, Japan, China, Italy, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden, Wings Over the World pulls together a series of mammoth proportions. Containing much previously unseen footage from around the world, each hour long documentary tells the story of 20th century flight as seen through the eyes of those who were boys at the time of the Wright brothers memorable first flight - boys who grew into the men who built world aviation. Two brothers, Allan and Malcolm Lockheed, had a keen interest in all things mechanical. By 1910 Allan had become a self-taught pilot and mechanic. Within a few years they were building aircraft in the back of a garage and Lockheed Aircraft Manufacturing was born. But following World War I, the factory closed and the team dispersed. With Malcolm designing automobile brake systems in the interim, it took almost ten years for the team to regroup. They eventually moved from sea planes to biplanes to spy planes. This fascinating story not only chronicles the rise of the company but also concentrates on the cloak and dagger world of surveillance, cold war spy technology and Lockheed's continuing role in this secret area of 20th century aviation.moreless
