Dyeing Is Easy, Comedy Is Hard

Episode Number: 81    Season Num: 4    First Aired: Thursday January 31, 2002    Prod Code: 64414
Rosie O'Donnell plays Bonnie, a no-nonsense single mom who clashes with Jack over the raising of their son, Elliot, fathered from Jack's sperm-bank donation. Bonnie's enraged because Jack had 12-year-old Elliot's hair bleached blond, so she lays down the law. "From now on," she tells him, "stay out of my kid's life. I don't want you to see him again." A parallel storyline unfolds at a wedding gala, where Will poses as a tennis pro (because nobody likes lawyers); and Grace caustically toasts the bridegroom, her ex-fiancé. "I've always thought about having a child," she says. "But not as a husband."

Karen: You know, maybe there is an alligator running around somewhere with me as a handbag. I mean, who knows what they do with my old skin? (edit)
Bonnie: Now Jack, don't you remember a conversation we had where I said I didn't want you to see my kid? Or was the soundtrack of Evita blaring too loud in your head?!
Jack: Hey, I wasn't part of any of this, ok? They came to me, and the first thing I did was bring Elliot back here
Bonnie: Are you wearing blush?
Jack: Okay, the second thing I did...was bring Elliot back here. (edit)
Bonnie: (to Karen) If there was any justice in this world, there would be an alligator walking around with you as a handbag. (edit)
Karen: Knock, knock, anybody homo?
Jack: I am, I am! (edit)
Bonnie: I'm gay, Jack.
Jack: No you're not.
Bonnie: Yes I am.
Jack: No you're not.
Bonnie: Yes I am. I'm gay.

Bonnie: Home Depot.
Jack: k.d. Lang, you are a lesbian! (edit)

Bonnie: (turning off the TV) Daytime TV sucks.

A clever little dig at both the risible nature of the quality of TV during the day, but more importantly an in-joke reference to the fact that Rosie O'Donnell had had up to the time of the episode's airing, one of the most successful daytime talk shows, winning numerous Emmy awards. (edit)
Title: Dyeing is Easy, Comedy is Hard
A play on words of the famous quote "Dying is easy, comedy is hard", reputedly the last words of Sir Donald Wolfit, a famous British actor who died in 1968. He was referring to the idea that playing tragic roles was much easier than comic ones, even though one would think the opposite were true, since comedy seems so effortless (as with most things that seem effortless), but is very hard indeed. (edit)
Bonnie: I come home and find Jonny Quest eating a bologna sandwich.

This is a reference to the animated series that ran in the 60s, and was revived briefly in the 80s, about a young boy, the son of a famous scientist, and his various adventures. Jonny had bright yellow hair, hence the comment from Bonnie about her surprise at her son's new hair colour. (edit)
Grace: Wow, Elliott, your hair - it's very... 'Nice Day for a White Wedding'.

This is an allusion to the 1983 Billy Idol hit of the same name. Idol was famous for his bleached blond hair. (edit)
Jack: I'll have a gay old time

This is a reference to a line in the theme song to The Flintstones, 'you'll have a gay old time.' (edit)
